I was sidetracked by the NCAA Tournament and a long PBS interview for my day job, and here we are on a Saturday again.
A few emails piqued my interest in a big way this week, including from one of my favorite beverage companies: The Finnish Long Drink.
They’re blowing up the Finnish tradition of kalsarikännit, or drinking at home in your underwear for the NCAA Tournament. (Here’s a great book on that: Päntsdrunk.)
From March 18 to April 7, The Long Drink is offering six-packs of its drinks for just $0.01!
“While college basketball is one of the most exciting times of the year, bars can sometimes be a less than ideal place to watch with crowds and distractions,” Long Drink co-founder Sakari Manninen said. “This felt like the perfect time to tap into the Long Drink’s Finnish roots and give drinkers another option – enjoying the games, pants-free or otherwise, in the comfort of their own home. Of course, for those who prefer to watch in the bar, we would strongly recommend wearing pants.”
Go to the store, buy a six-pack, then follow the directions at this link, and the company will Venmo or PayPal you back in 24-48 hours.
The other one that got me scratching my head was an email from Holistic Spirits Co. — a spirits company co-founded by Woody Harrelson. A celebrity-endorsed/founded spirits company is not out of the norm, as we’ve addressed in the past, like when we interviewed Sammy Hagar.
But this one hit on the trend of “functional beverages” and claims Holistic Spirits’ vodka and gin have “scientific patent-pending blends” that are better for the consumer and planet.
The blends include artichoke, elderberry, muscadine grape and green tea leaf extract.
Woody has always seemed like a happy-go-lucky dude, and this picture certainly shows he’s having fun with the spirits industry.
Interesting reads of the week
I’m never mad when a publication like VinePair tells readers what to drink more of, and here’s they outline 11 beers that a should be sipped on more.
The New York Times found a growing trend of diners in big cities leaving leftovers at restaurants. That’s crazy… in this economy?!
Ever worried you’re sipping on a cocktail wrong? Food & Wine outlined some old books on cocktail etiquette.
I always love retrospectives by journalists who have covered things for a long time. Well, Lettie Teague has written about wine for the Wall Street Journal for more than 15 years, so here she takes a look back on what’s changed, and what hasn’t.
What we’re drinking
This week, for St. Patrick’s Day, I had a few things I touched on in last week’s post.
That included some delicious pours of Guinness.
Also had an Edmund Fitzgerald Porter from Great Lakes Brewing Company, a great beer honoring the shipwreck — which has been in my head more than normal lately (which is already a lot) because of the whistling of Gordon Lightfoot’s “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” in an episode of Severance this season.
Always take the leftovers.
